After a month's worth of speculation and innuendo, rumors and rumblings, Brett Favre will, in fact, report to Packers training camp. Where it goes from there? That remains to be seen. He should resurface at Packers camp Monday, where he will be officially reinstated and be added to the Packers' active roster. He will take a physical and a conditioning test at that time. Shortly thereafter, head coach Mike McCarthy will talk to Favre about
his role with the team. McCarthy, GM Ted Thompson and Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy met Sunday and decided to wait until Monday to make a final decision about whether Favre would have an opportunity to regain his starting position. The decision to reinstate Favre came one day after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell essentially told Favre and the Packers to resolve their differences or he would help them resolve them. "I think the discussions are moving ahead and I hope we have something resolved by Monday," Goodell told the NFL Network on Saturday. "I think we've gotten to the point where we kind of have to force it." As it turned out, Goodell wasn't willing to wait until Monday to force the issue. Goodell ultimately felt that if Favre wanted to play professional football again, then he should be allowed to do so. Favre had applied for reinstatement on Tuesday, but Goodell declined to rule immediately on his application, hoping that the dispute would be resolved without Favre actually reporting to Packers camp. |
